If you’ve been living under rock or maybe in a storage closet, you may not know Dave — or maybe you’ve just forgotten him. Dave is our iconic garden gnome. Born to the David Suzuki Digs My Garden campaign in 2009, Dave encouraged Canadians to grow their own garden without using pesticides. We graciously thanked Dave for his hard work on the garden campaign, but during an office renovation, he was locked away in a storage closet…
He hasn’t been outdoors since.
As we approach the 30×30 Nature Challenge, we’ve brushed the dust off Dave and invited him to get outside in nature. Needless to say, he isn’t a happy camper. Who would be after going without fresh air or natural sunlight for three and half years? He’s feeling sluggish and his creative juices aren’t flowing, but Dave is determined to resurrect his legendary role as the David Suzuki Foundation’s nature gnome.
Dave will be blogging about his journey to get outside for at least 30 minutes a day, every day, during May. He’ll share his personal progress, tips and how he feels after experiencing the outdoors again – perhaps he’ll become a little less grumpy. Dave will also provide an inside scoop on how the staff at the David Suzuki Foundation are keeping up with the 30×30 Nature Challenge.
You can pre-register for the 30×30 Challenge on Earth day, April 22, at davidsuzuki.org/30x30challenge. We encourage you to spread the message to your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. Daily tips and a pop-up picnic tool kit will also be available, and you can share your experiences in nature through our weekly photo contest!
Get reconnected with nature and encourage Dave to bring back joy to all the bugs, birds and plants in Canadian gardens and nature everywhere!
